There are more than 20 trunk communication operators in Russia. The length of networks of a number of leading players is about 200 thousand kilometers. The digital fiber-optic communication line of the market leader Rostelecom is almost three times larger.
The construction of a new communication line from the western to eastern borders of the Russian Federation, called TEA NEXT (New Generation Transit Europe – Asia), is being carried out by content writing service Rostelecom’s subsidiary, Atlas.
Today, the Moscow-Torzhok-St. Petersburg section is being built as part of the project. Its construction will be completed at the end of this year or the beginning of next year, said Vsevolod Korzhaev, the development director of the Atlas company, at the Transport Networks Russia conference. – The Torzhok – Russia-Latvia border section has already been built. It is planned to start work from Torzhok to Kyakhta, located near Mongolia. The deadline for the delivery of the backbone communications network is scheduled for the end of 2025.
ТЕА NEXT uses domestic cable, and it will be enough for the project, he added.
The only manufacturer of telecom cables in Russia is the company "Optic Fiber Systems" from Saransk. In February, it announced an investment project that will help cover the domestic market and meet the needs of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) states.
In total, there are at least 20 cable factories operating in Russia, experts noted.
The ТЕА NEXT network can count on new technologies. Recently, the Russian holding company Shvabe announced the development of new classes of optical fiber, which is necessary for multi-gigabit data transmission networks.
Rostelecom's land-based backbone network is an alternative to sea routes, which are also being implemented today. Among them is the project to build the Murmansk-Vladivostok trans-Arctic underwater fiber-optic communication line "Polar Express" .
The maximum data transfer rates in networks depend on the developed optical fiber infrastructure, which is relevant when introducing new communication standards and services.

TEA NEXT will form a market for fiber-optic communication line infrastructure in the country, meaning that any company will be able to take fibers and create communication networks on this basis, thereby providing higher quality services to clients, explained Vsevolod Korzhaev.
The design capacity of the fiber-optic communication line will be 96 dark fibers (Dark Fiber) – these are the ones that are being laid in the cable network in anticipation of future growth in information flows.
